Sound familiar?

Tired of chasing
down payments?

You do great work. Getting paid for it shouldn't be the hardest part of the day.

01
"I'll mail you a check"

Then you wait a week. Then it clears in another five days. You finished the job on Tuesday.

02
Lost the job on the spot

They wanted to put it on a card. You could only take cash. They called somebody else.

03
Paperwork after dark

Invoices at the kitchen table at 9pm because there was no way to send one from the truck.

04
Never know what's coming

Cash flow is a guess. You can't plan a second truck around money that might show up.

There's a better way — and it fits in your pocket.

How Square fixes it

Everything you need
to get paid — in one app

Tap to pay on the job

Take a card right there at the tailgate. Tap, dip, or swipe — or take it on your phone with no hardware at all.

Invoices from the truck

Build and send a professional invoice in under a minute, before you've even pulled off the street.

Next-business-day deposits

Money in your account as fast as the next business day. No more waiting on a check to clear.

Estimates & scheduling

Send a quote, get it approved, turn it into a booked job and then an invoice. Same app, no re-typing.

Access to funding

Square can offer financing based on what you actually process — how a lot of guys buy truck number two.

Payroll when you're ready

Add a crew and run payroll from the same account. It scales when you do, not before.

The hardware

Fits in one hand.
Runs off your truck.

No counter, no cables, no register. Square Handheld takes a tap, a chip, or a swipe wherever the job is — the driveway, the back gate, the roof of a customer's house.

  • Tap, chip, or swipe — every card your customers actually carry
  • Built-in receipt printer — hand them paper before you pull away
  • All-day battery — it lasts longer than your shift does
  • Or no hardware at all — take the tap on the phone in your pocket

Invoicing

Send it in a minute.
Get paid without asking twice.

Most people working for themselves lose more money to slow invoices than to processing fees. Square Invoices is free, unlimited, and does the chasing for you.

  • Unlimited invoices, free — no monthly fee, no cap, no per-invoice charge. You only pay when one gets paid.
  • Deposits and milestones — take 50% up front and bill the rest on delivery, so you're never fronting the whole job.
  • Recurring invoices — set a retainer once and it goes out on schedule every month without you touching it.
  • Automatic reminders — Square nudges them before the due date and after. You stop being the person who chases.
  • Card on file & autopay — repeat clients approve once and the next invoice pays itself.
Estimate → invoice

Send a quote, let them approve it online, then convert it into an invoice in one tap. Nothing gets re-typed and nothing gets lost between the two.

You can see it landed

Know when an invoice was delivered, viewed, and paid. "I never got it" stops being a thing that costs you two weeks.

Your terms, spelled out

Due dates, Net 7/14/30, itemised lines, hours and rates, notes, and attachments — the contract or scope can ride along with the invoice.

They pay how they want

Card, bank transfer, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or split it with Afterpay. Fewer excuses, faster settlement.

It looks like a real business

Your logo, your colours, your business name on every invoice and receipt. Clients treat a professional invoice differently to a text message.

Sorted for tax time

Every invoice, payment and fee is logged in one place and exports cleanly, so January stops being an archaeology project.

Invoice features and availability are set by Square and subject to change.

With Dual Pricing, the small card fee is built into the card price. Cash customers pay the cash price. You keep the whole ticket either way.

Square is the only major processor that makes Afterpay this easy — because Square owns Afterpay. Your customer pays over time. You get the whole ticket up front, same as any other card.

That's how a $1,200 job stops being a "let me think about it."

I used to chase payments for weeks. Now I get paid before I pull out of the driveway. It paid for itself the first afternoon.
Marcus T.Landscaper · Dallas, TX
Sending an invoice from my truck took me about 45 seconds. My customers think I run a way bigger operation than I do.
Deon R.Junk Removal · Atlanta, GA
Square got me funding to buy a second truck. Paid it back in four months and now I'm booked solid through the season.
Pete W.Pressure Washing · Phoenix, AZ
Half my customers wanted to put it on a card. The day I started taking cards my average ticket went up. Simple as that.
Luis G.Tree Service · Orlando, FL

Results vary. What any one business sees depends on its ticket sizes, how often customers reach for a card, and how the tools get used.

Straight-up pricing

Square pricing for freelancers

Two ways to do this. Either the card fee comes out of your margin, or it's built into the card price and you keep the whole ticket. Pick the one that suits how you quote.

Dual Pricing means displaying a cash price and a card price. Rules for cash discounting and surcharging vary by state and change over time — a specialist will confirm what applies where you work before you switch. Pricing and features are set by Square and subject to change.

When you grow

Same account.
Bigger operation.

The day you open a shop, hire a crew, or add a second location, you don't start over. Counter hardware, team permissions, and payroll all run on the account you already have — and every job you've ever invoiced is already in it.

Most guys never need this on day one. It matters that it's there on year three.

Common questions

Everything freelancers ask
before they start

Can freelancers use Square?

Yes. Square is built for sole operators as much as for shops. You can open an account as an individual or sole proprietor, take card payments from your phone with no hardware, and send unlimited invoices, all with no monthly fee on the Free plan.

How do I take credit card payments as a freelancer?

Three ways, and you can use all of them. Tap to pay directly on your phone with no extra hardware, use a card reader for tap, chip and swipe, or send an invoice the customer pays online by card or bank transfer. Set-up takes about an hour with a specialist.

Does Square charge a monthly fee?

Not on the Free plan. There is no monthly fee, no contract and no minimum. You pay a per-transaction rate only when you actually get paid: 2.6% plus 15 cents for in-person cards and 3.3% plus 30 cents for online and invoice payments. Paid plans lower the per-transaction rate.

How fast do I get my money with Square?

Deposits arrive as fast as the next business day on a standard schedule. That is the main difference freelancers notice: no waiting on a cheque to arrive and then clear.

What is dual pricing and how does it work?

Dual pricing means displaying a cash price and a card price, with the card processing cost built into the card price. Cash customers pay the cash price. Rules for cash discounting and surcharging vary by state and change over time, so a specialist confirms what applies where you work before you switch.

Is Square good for invoicing?

Square Invoices is free and unlimited. You can take deposits and bill milestones, set up recurring invoices for retainers, send automatic payment reminders, save a card on file for autopay, convert an approved estimate into an invoice, and see when an invoice was delivered, viewed and paid.

Do I need a business licence or an LLC to use Square?

No. You can sign up as an individual or sole proprietor using your own name and Social Security number. You can switch the account to an LLC or corporation later without starting over.

Is Square for Freelancers part of Square?

Not exactly. Square for Freelancers is run by ProVantage POS, an authorized Square partner — so there is a real working relationship, and we can get you set up directly. But we are an independent business, not owned or operated by Block, Inc., and this is not an official Square website. We earn a commission from Square when you sign up through our links, which costs you nothing and does not change your rates. Square is a trademark of Block, Inc.
